Muzzle loading rifle conceived by the Austrian Lieutenant Joseph Lorenz, the rifle’s official production started in 1854. The Union recorded purchased 226,924 and the Confederacy bought as many as 100,000. Lorenz rifles saw heavy use in the Army of Tennessee in 1863-64. It was the third most used weapon during the Civil War and is way under represented in the reenacting hobby.
