Inspired by the Charleville Model 1763 musket, this was the first military gun produced in the United States.

Secretary of War, Timothy Pickering, suggested using the French musket as a model to start production with. Built at the Springfield and Harper's Ferry arsenals as well as by Eli Whitney, about 85,000 Model 1795s were produced at the Springfield armory.

The Model 1795 was used in the War of 1812, but shortcomings in both the design and manufacturing process led to the development of the Springfield Model 1812 at Springfield only, and eventually the Springfield Model 1816 at both Springfield and Harper's Ferry.
