The Model 1855 was in production until 1860 and was the standard issue firearm of the regular army in the pre-Civil War years. The 2nd Model 1855, introduced in 1858, was a very attractive musket. It differed from the first model in that a patchbox was added to the stock, a simpler leaf sight replaced the earlier ladder sight and and the nose cap was steel instead of brass.
